"Period poverty" spreads amid the COVID-19 pandemic
As the impact of the new coronavirus worsens economic hardship, calls for "menstrual poverty" -- the inability to purchase sanitary products such as napkins -- are becoming more widespread. In a private survey, 20% of students said they had difficulty obtaining sanitary products.

The Tokyo-based voluntary organization Red Box Japan is promoting an initiative to provide boxes filled with sanitary napkins to schools free of charge. Its representative, Shiori Oguma (25), says, "We want to increase the number of schools that provide these boxes so that no child will lose an opportunity to receive an education due to their period."
