Red Box Japan (headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Executive Director: Shiona Oguma), a social activity originating in the UK that donates sanitary products to Japanese schools, is accepting donations to help resolve "period poverty" and create an environment in which all students attending Japanese schools have access to sanitary products. They are also looking for schools that would like to introduce Red Box.

What is Red Box Japan?

The Red Box Project is a social movement that began in the UK. It was named "Red Box" because sanitary products are placed in red boxes and donated to schools. The movement was founded in Portsmouth in March 2017 and has since spread throughout the UK and around the world, particularly in European countries. The Japanese initiative was established in December 2019 and operates within Japan under the name " Red Box Japan ."

What is "period poverty," a social issue the world is currently working to solve?

"Period poverty" refers to not having the money or access to sanitary products. In the UK, it is estimated that around one in ten students cannot afford sanitary napkins or tampons. They resort to tissues or socks as substitutes, or even miss out on educational opportunities by missing out on school.

Even in Japan, where inequality is growing, it has been revealed that one in five young people have had difficulty purchasing sanitary products for financial reasons . The Red Box Project aims to eliminate "menstrual poverty" by supporting students during their period through donations of sanitary products.

Anyone can participate, whether they are an individual, a corporation, or an organization.

Donations are accepted via the Red Box Japan official website.
